"The Lady of the Lake is a significant enchantress in Arthurian legend (Matter of Britain), known for providing King Arthur with Excalibur, raising Lancelot, and mentoring Merlin before imprisoning him. Often named Nimue, Viviane, or Niniane, she is a fae‑like figure associated with a mystical lake and Avalon. She plays crucial roles, including giving Arthur his sword and taking the dying king to Avalon.
She raises Sir Lancelot as her own after his father's death.
Various medieval texts treat the Lady as one or multiple different sorceresses, often described as a fairy or a high‑ranking enchantress living in a castle under a lake."
