Hel is the guardian goddess of the Norse Underworld. Hel is often depicted as divided, one half lifeless bone and the other living flesh, a symbol of contradiction. Yet in a recent dream she came to me differently. She was not split but contained both life and death together, neither corpse nor maiden but something far more elusive. Hel stands in a liminal space, embodying the mystery of what it means to be both ending and eternal. I also chose to paint Hel with the black wolf that guards the gate to the Underworld.
