"Holda is widely known in Germany as Frau Holle from the Grimm’s fairy tale of the same name. Her name was first mentioned in writing about a thousand years ago, but she is assumed to be even older. Scholars link her to mythological figures such as Frigg or Hel, or trace her back to a neolithic mother goddess.
Holda is a patroness of spinning and weaving and is said to make it snow by shaking out her bedding, or to bring nature to life as she strides across the meadows in spring.
While there are many legends about her, I chose to focus on these aspects. I imagined Holda shaking out her woven tapestry in winter to herald a new year of flourishing green and plentiful harvest."
