"The werewolf is common in European folklore and is a person cursed with shapeshifting between a human and a wolf. The legend is about human's mix of civility (humanity, control, culture, intelligence) and their darker, animalistic nature (violence, sexuality and uncontrollable impulse). My painting looks at a female Victorian werewolf ... which at the time was a symbol of the fear of a breakdown in a range of society rules - from civilised refinement to a savageness that is within - a lack of control and a human's dual nature of the refined and the animal - in this case pertaining to class and a woman's expected moral behaviour. I also wanted to hint at the distress, pain and struggle of the werewolf's curse."
