MinHwa is a type of traditional Korean folk painting, often depicting animals, especially tigers and magpies. The tigers and the magpies were often seen as a social satire : a foolish and imposing tiger symbolizing authority being mocked by a clever magpie (the people).
While not fables in the strict sense, Minhwa paintings convey narratives that shape people’s lives and their relationship to authority. I enjoy modernizing and personally reinterpreting this style, bringing in a surrealist vibe to express the idea that we are free to use existing narratives to redefine the stories that shape our lives on our own terms. For this, I blend different styles and influences like street art, traditional Asian and European arts, surrealism, etc.
