Long ago, the Grimalkins on Gridley Island were numerous. After humans arrived, Grimalkins disappeared from the island, all but one. One night a year, on a date which no one on the Island can agree, the Grimalkins return to Gridley Island. But the last Grimalkin stays on Gridley year-round to keep the portal open. The Grids, as the islanders are called, know she is nearby when tiny, insignificant miracles take place. Maybe the mashed potatoes on your plate turn from blue to purple and back to creamy white again. You smile and go on eating like nothing happened. Maybe some of the items in the house spontaneously float into the air for a few seconds. Maybe the yard light that hasn’t worked in ten years suddenly starts illuminating. Grimalkins are otherworldly beings that appear in a catlike form to our human eyes. They are agents of good chaos, bringing moments of radical wonder, sweet mischief, and sparking inspiration wherever they go.
