Il Famiglio is inspired by the folklore and iconography of the European witch trials. The painting explores the figure of the familiar, a supernatural companion believed to protect, guide, or serve a witch. Among the creatures most often associated with these beliefs, the toad became an enduring symbol of fear, superstition, and the unknown.
