"This piece was inspired by the image of a stag shedding the velvet coat that covers its antlers when they are young, a process that marks their maturity. When I first saw the image, I didn’t know what I was looking at. The intense red against the stag’s pale features made me think it showed the aftermath of its first fight. It felt violent and exposed, and I read it as a moment of lost innocence. Later, I learned that it was simply a natural physiological process. What I had initially understood as something symbolic and emotional turned out to be ordinary and biological, which changed how I thought about the image, but not entirely how it stayed with me."
