"-Ex(s)cape-goat!- This is the spell. Goats are very beautiful, friendly and intellingent animals. Like some other animals they were linked to "witches" because actually many of the women considered witches were herbalists, wise women, so connected to nature, often involved in agriculture, or in harvesting herbs and medicinal remedies. So they both came from the "Pagus" (from this word derives "paganism"). The goat is indeed very present in european folklore, sometimes as witches' companion but also connected to mythological creatures and pagan deities as Herne-Pan. The goat was considered a symbol of prosperity. Only later, when everything linked to nature, pagan culture and ancient lore was demonized, the goat was demonized as well (the new religion wrongly saw the horns as a sign of "evil" as all horned animals were the inspiration for depicting "evil" visually shown as a monster - though the "monsters" generally come from within-). During the witch hunt not only people were persecuted, but sometimes animals as well were literally judged in trials, absurd but true. In times of social instability, divided, plagues, prejudice "witches became the "scapegoats" (the social tendence of scapegoating reached its peak). So, -Escape goat!- is a call to knowledge, tolerance, and respect towards all living beings, humans and animals.
Dedicated to Carlo Ginzburg (author of three books I read), renown italian historian and researcher specializing in witchcraft and folklore, who recently died."
